Thanks to Free Fall Baltimore the Baltimore Folk Music Society is offering free American Contra and Square dance tonight (10/10) and Wednesday (10/24/12) evening. Before disco and hip hop, before the age of break dancing, zumba, boy bands, and dance crews, there was the “original hall dance”, Contra and Square dancing. Made popular all the way back in the 1800’s, Contra dance is a North American line dance where couples would face each other in parallel lines and dance the corresponding sequence the caller says. Square dancing, however, is where a set of four couples dance to the moves that the caller announces. It is called a hall dance because the dance lines would go from wall-to-wall.
One of the joys of these dances is the live music accompanying it. Often lead by a fiddle, there is an arrangement of hornpipes, reels, and jigs to get an authentic experience of what the dance would have felt back in the day.
The caller starts the dance by showing the people what each dance move is. This call and response type of dancing requires no experience but, if you have any, you will appreciate it just as well. There is also an informal dress code so come as you are and just have fun.
Don’t have someone to go with or seem to be an odd-number of people in your group? With Contra and square dancing you are consistently switching partners. This light environment provides a community atmosphere where people can just have fun and be free regardless of whether you have a date or want to try something new.
The Baltimore Folk Music Society is a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to preserving and promoting folk music, dance, and tradition. BFMS sponsors regular dances, concerts, family events, and related activities year-round.
The Wednesday night dances are at Lovely Lane Church at 2200 St. Paul Street, Baltimore, MD 21218.
